Effective June 6th, 2016 New Guidelines for Asbestos Management were released by Safe Work Manitoba.
To save you some time here is a list of the top 10 changes within the new guideline to help you better understand how they may affect you and your business:
- Effective June 6, 2016.
- Replaces “Guidelines for Working With Asbestos” March 2008 and “Guidelines for an Asbestos Operations and Maintenance Program” February 2007.
- Clearly defines when an Asbestos Inventory is needed and what needs to be included in it (ASTM Standard E 2356).
- New specific training requirements for asbestos supervisors/workers, trades workers and custodial staff.
- Notification to Workplace Safety & Health 5 days in advance of all Type 2 and Type 3 work including Glove Bag Work.
- New recommendations for air monitoring.
- Significant changes to the requirements on Type 2 and Type 3 asbestos abatement projects (e.g. Drywall joint compound removal in excess of 3 hours is now considered Type 3 abatement).
- New requirements for D.O.P leak testing of HEPA vacuums and negative air cabinets.
- Mandatory use of lockdown agents after all Type 2 and Type 3 abatement.
- New administrative penalties for non-compliance.
