Did you know that radon is the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers? Health Canada states that approximately 3,200 Canadians die each year because of radon induced lung cancer. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is present in all the air we breathe. Outdoors radon is diluted and of little concern but indoors radon can become concentrated and create an indoor air quality issue and significant health hazard. You cannot see, smell or taste radon and as a result, elevated levels could be present inside a building, and you would never know without testing for it.
This presentation delved into the issue of radon in buildings/properties, covered not only the understanding and risks association with radon but also practical aspects such as:
- What is radon?
- Exposure and health effects of radon exposure
- Regulatory requirements that schools must comply with
- Applicable guidelines and regulations
- Testing for radon – Includes planning for testing entire building portfolios
- Mitigation of radon – The Implementation of Radon mitigation systems
The focus was on creating a safer and healthier environment by addressing radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, to protect employees in buildings.
Radon concentrations in our homes & buildings can vary significantly from hour to hour, day to day, and even more so from season to season. As a result, long-term tests are the best way of estimating the annual average radon concentration in your home or building. Long-term radon tests range from 91 days to 1 year in length, and are minimally invasive, taking up no more room than a cup of coffee.
Health Canada recommend radon testing be conducted during the winter heating season (between October and April) for a minimum period of 91 days.
