Meet our National Practice Leader for the GEO Group, Vanessa Marshall

Meet our National Practice Leader for the Geotechnical Engineering Group, Vanessa Marshall!

In celebration of Professional Engineers Day in Ontario, Pinchin is excited to shine a spotlight on one of our talented Geotechnical Engineers and Practice Leaders, Vanessa Marshall. Vanessa joined our Waterloo team in 2017 as a Senior Technical Manager and through her hard work and dedication she quickly advanced  – first as Regional Practice Lead in Geotechnical Services in 2017, and then on to National Practice Leader in 2018.

For those who know Vanessa and her solutions-focused attitude, this comes as no surprise. Vanessa started off as a mining engineer before completing her Master’s Degree in Engineering, Project Management, and Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 2010, Vanessa has accumulated over 15 years of experience in civil engineering. She is registered as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario, and is reputed for her collaborative approach to project management. In addition to Ontario, Vanessa is also currently licensed as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Vanessa is a lifelong Waterloo resident and has been an active partner in the expansion and development of the Region of Waterloo. More specifically, Vanessa was one of the lead geotechnical engineers on the Region of Waterloo Light Rail Transit project, having provided innovative and cost-effective solutions to bring the project to completion.

“Due to the many structures, it was a fascinating project with many working parts,” Vanessa said when asked about her involvement in the project. “It is exciting to be part of a project that is helping the Region grow and prosper.”

Vanessa is leading Pinchin’s geotechnical expansion with support from the Executive Vice President’s from coast to coast. From strategic hires to growing junior staff through mentorship and practical training, the geotechnical service area is growing rapidly across Canada. Under Vanessa’s direction, the Waterloo office will be developing a Materials Testing Laboratory in 2019. Vanessa is based in our Waterloo office, which is one of Pinchin’s oldest and most established regional offices. Opening in 1994, the Waterloo office now offers solutions from several of Pinchin’s service lines, including Environmental Due Diligence & Remediation, Geotechnical Services, Occupational Health and Safety, and Hazardous Building Materials.
